References

This is really a first step in providing reference material.  I have a goodly number of individual articles as well as books that have articles about Disas.  It's going to take quite a while to get them all entered but I know from my email that there is a demand for this page.  I will list them according to year so the most recent is on top.  Some of the references will be virtually impossible to locate due to having been published in small foreign journals nobody has ever heard of. If you have a favorite that you would like to list, email me.

  1. 1999; Orchids of Southern Africa; H. P. Linder & H. Kurzweil; A.A.Balkema; hardcover; 492 pages; 500 color plates; 82 line drawings; 458 maps. This has to be the most complete taxonomic record ever produced about South African Orchids.  I found it to be easy to read and very instructive. Great for descriptions and locations.  No culture except to describe habitats.

  2. 1997; Growing South African Indigenous Orchids;  Karsten H.K. Wodrich;  A.A.Balkema; hardcover; 255 pages; 94 color plates; 98 b&w photos.  This is the best and most current source of information about growing Disas as well as some of the other terrestrials.  If you can only afford one book, this is the one!

  3. 1997; African Orchids in the Wild and in Cultivation; Isobyl & Eric La Croix; Timber Press; hardcover; 379 pages; 103 color plates; 97 line drawings.  Covers those African species which can be found commercially available. Unfortunately only about 9 pages about Disas

  4. 1991; Orchids of Malawi; I. F. la Croix, E. A. S. la Croix, & T. M. la Croix; A. A. Balkema; hardcover; 358 pages; 120 color plates; 276 line drawings; 283 maps. A complete reference for the orchids of Malawi including the 22+ Disa species.  Beautiful pictures of the Malawi Disas. Definitely makes one consider traveling there.

  5. 1982; Wild Orchids of Southern Africa; Joyce Stewart, H. P. Linder, E. A. Schelpe, A. V. Hall; Macmillan South Africa; hardcover; 307 pages; 400+ color photos. This book was considered the book to use to identify species prior to Linder's current book.

  6. 1976; Orchids for the Outdoor Garden; A. W. Darnell; Dover Publications; 467 pages; 22 b&w plates.  An interesting book for habitat reference.
